Helene's Story

"I exclusively breastfed my baby until she was six months old, and she has always been well. I learned this in the Credit with Education program."- Helene, Madagascar

Other mothers in nearby villages still struggle with poverty, disease, and chronic hunger. They must watch their children waste away--with no hope that things will ever change.

But Helene's eyes shine with pride as she looks at her healthy, laughing, six-month-old daughter. Thanks to Freedom from Hunger's Credit with Education program, her four children are all healthy--and her family has a future full of promise and hope.

With her loan, Helene expanded her business of selling homemade beverages and foods from her family's farm in Madagascar. Helene is deeply proud of her increased income and profits, but she's just as enthusiastic about the valuable lessons she's learned about caring for her children:

"I exclusively breastfed my baby until she was six months old, and she has always been well. I learned this in the Credit with Education program."

After Helene makes her weekly loan payment, she participates in "learning sessions," led by local field agents. Through lively, supportive discussions, Helene and her group learn how simple strategies--such as breastfeeding--can protect their children from life-threatening illness and malnutrition.

Helene's story is not unique. So many other women have gained such basic life-saving information--once they joined Credit with Education.

Together with the small loans that each woman receives, their newly acquired knowledge inspires amazing transformations--from despair to hope, from invisibility to empowerment.
