Position Summary
The Vice President of Operations is responsible for the leadership, oversight and organizational direction of Finance, Human Resources, General Services, Information Technology and Knowledge Management. The VP of Operations leads a management team to ensure that the resources of Freedom from Hunger are allocated and administered for optimal impact in favor of the organization’s strategic objectives, including support to international operations. The VP of Operations oversees financial accountability, resource administration and internal controls to meet statutory compliance and ensure the integrity of data and financial statements. The VP of Operations, a member of the Leadership Team, participates in decisions on strategic planning, organizational policy, capital allocation, and operational budgeting.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead a Financial Management process that ensures financial resources are allocated according to stated strategic objectives through an effective annual budget process and informed decision-making by budget managers.
- Supervise the Director of Finance in all aspects of effective financial accountability, reporting, and internal controls to meet compliance with all relevant statutes and organizational commitments and to ensure the integrity of data and all financial statements.
- Supervise the Director of Human Resources in all aspects of human resources policy formulation, revision and compliance, benefits and payroll administration, recruitment, on-boarding and termination, staff development, and support to international offices.
- Supervise the Director of General Services in all aspects of infrastructure and facilities management, contracting and procurement, events planning and management, logistics and inventory, travel, and all other services and support provided for the smooth functioning of Freedom from Hunger’s offices.
- Supervise the Manager of Information Technology to ensure the effective use of IT resources and systems throughout the organization, the development of new IT solutions to organizational challenges, and compliance with IT policies and procedures.
- Supervise the Knowledge Manager in all aspects of support to the sound and effective administration of FFH’s knowledge resources to serve organizational strategic objectives, including the FFH intranet, document archives, various databases and other data resources.
- Coordinate and facilitate legal services to protect FFH trademark, intellectual property and other interests and to manage risk.
- Build and lead the Operations Management Team to identify and exploit synergies, coordinate functions, maintain healthy conflict and collaboration, and communicate frequently and clearly to and through the Operations Department.
- Participate as an effective member of the Leadership Team to contribute to decisions on strategic planning, organizational policy, and resource allocation.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Prior Experience
- Ten years experience in operations management, including three years experience at a senior management or executive level, preferably in the nonprofit international development sector and preferably some years of international experience.
- Undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline, post-graduate degree preferred.
- Ability to delegate effectively and elicit top performance from a diverse team using an open and participatory management style.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, effectively prioritize according to a clear vision, and maintain strategic attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to direct and manage change effectively.
- Knowledge of nonprofit finance, human resources and sound administrative practices. Knowledge of information technology solutions also desirable.
- Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders and diverse management styles in a collaborative, team framework.
- Ability to represent in a professional and compelling manner.
- Fluency in English. French and/or Spanish proficiency also desirable.
