Development Research Analyst

Title/Status: Development Research Analyst
Exempt
Reports to: Director of Individual Gifts
Location: Davis or San Francisco, California

 

Position Summary

The Development Research Analyst will develop from scratch a research function for Freedom from Hunger that generates accurate, informative, and useful insights about prospective and current donors for use in devising effective solicitation and relationship management strategies. The Research Analyst will install best practices at Freedom from Hunger for identifying and accessing public information resources and will devise information tools for use by staff, trustees, and selected other supporters of the organization. Development research is a sensitive matter that requires judgment and discretion, as well as native curiosity and the ability to imagine and limn linkages and connections that will serve a sophisticated development program. The Development Research Analyst will interact with all members of the External Affairs and Program Services divisions in a continual search for ideas about programs and projects to which current and prospective supporters could be connected.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and rate potential donors to the full array of Freedom from Hunger programs
  • Use the Internet and other resources to determine a prospect’s capacity, philanthropic interest, and connections to other stakeholders
  • Fulfill research requests by gathering, interpreting, and presenting large volumes of information in a clear, concise, and relevant manner
  • Prepare background material for and participate in prospect review sessions, and prepare follow up materials as required after each session
  • Organize and report findings from research in effective written communication, as appropriate to the request or project (profile, memo, briefing, etc.)
  • Monitor written and Internet resources on an ongoing basis to identify and track new prospects, build prospect pools, keep up to date on market trends and prospect development best practices, and alert staff members to potential fundraising opportunities
  • Attend professional research associated events as directed/budgeted to keep current with the best sites and practices in the development research world
  • Participate in the analysis of previous data mining efforts and outcomes

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Prior Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, international development, or related field, preferred.
  • Experience within a successful development program a plus, with knowledge of fundraising principles and practices preferred
  • Solid knowledge of word-processing, database management, and spreadsheet software, along with ability to navigate and use the Internet
  • Ability to conduct research with an emphasis on assessing wealth and giving capacity at the $100K+ level
  • Ability to gather, synthesize, and present information in a compelling manner
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and quality, with strong organization skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders and demonstrate teamwork
  • Fluency in English
